Ramayan is one of the most prominent literature of ancient India, which has considerably influenced the culture and ethos of the subcontinent since ancient times. Being immensely popular through the length and breadth of the country of India, this holy text has been written and rewritten many times over, by different writers and poets of the bygone times through their own perspective, knitting within their respective societal ideologies.One such adaptation of this grand saga was written by the medieval Indian poet Krittivas, in the middle ages, in Bengal. Originally composed in archaic Bengali, this text narrates the entire story of Lord Raam, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, in seven sections, with the narrative overall in sync with that of the Valmiki Ramayan, however with an interesting addition of the involvement of the Mother Goddess, Durga. This graphic novel illustrates that very excerpt from Krittivas' Ramayan, wherein Raavan, the Demon King of Lanka, while at intense war against Lord Raam, forsaken by his revered deity Lord Shiv and having lost most of his family, army and resources in battle extols Goddess Durga, begging Her to come save him at this terrible hour of misfortune. The Mother Goddess, pleased with his sincerity and devotion, at once arrives on the battlefield, and reassures him that She would herself fight his enemies on his behalf! Lord Raam, on the other end of the battlefield, is aghast at the sight of Devi Chandi on his enemy's side. How, then, will Lord Raam, the prince of Ayodhya, convince the Goddess to abandon the sinful Raavan and bless Him to emerge victorious in rescuing his rightful wife, the pious Devi Sita from the demon's clutches?
